Public Disapointment at Property Taxes

Panama City, FL– Property taxes have not “dropped like a rock” as Governor Christ said they would last April. Now, Florida Respresentative Jimmy Patronis, from District 6, is saying they’re still making efforts to lower the taxes.

“I’m disturbed, I would’ve expected to see more out of what was passed,” said Patronis. He says a special legislative session next month should shave one billion dollars from Florida’s budget, allowing more money to return to citizens.

He says recent real estate growth in the state and the Bay County area means corrections need to be made. “We just saw too much too fast too quickly,” he said.

Patronis says every level of government should be making adjustments to lower property taxes.

“It’s all fair and equal that we all need to cut,” he said, “And that’s why we’re going back to talahassee to cut our budget.”

Governor Christ is working on a homestead amendment to the consitution which would allow tax breaks for those with second homes and homesteads, but Patronis says this decision will be put in the voters hands, and it doesn’t cover all property owners.

“There will be a continued effort on my part,” he said, saying he had hopes for the session next month.
